A Fascinating Day Trip from Clarks Beach: Explore Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula

The No. 1 Day Trip from Clarks Beach: Explore Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula

When my guests ask for an easy and interesting 1-day trip this is my top recommendation. It doesn’t involve hours of driving and keeps you off busy highways.

Waiuku and the Awhitu Peninsula offer a stunning escape into nature, history, and breathtaking coastal views. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day in the countryside or an adventure exploring hidden gems, this region has something for everyone.

Morning: Waiuku’s Heritage and Kariotahi Beach
From Clarks Beach it’s only 20 minutes’ drive to Waiuku, a charming historic town with a rich past. Stroll through the town center, and soak in the atmosphere of New Zealand’s early colonial history.

If you’re a history buff, take a wander around Tamakae Reserve. It features a collection of historic buildings, including Hartmann House, Pollok Cottage, and the old Waiuku Jail.

The Waiuku Museum, located at 13 King Street, Waiuku, operates on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and Sundays from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm. Visits at other times can be arranged by appointment. For the most current information, it's advisable to contact the museum directly at 09 235 8698 or via email waiukumuseum@xtra.co.nz.

For a mid-morning treat, grab a coffee at one of the local cafés. Then, head to Kariotahi Beach, a dramatic black sand beach on the west coast. It’s perfect for a scenic walk. Be careful of the waves—the surf pounds in and it’s well-known for dangerous undertows. Check kariaotahi.org.nz/ for their patrol hours.

You’ll often see paragliders launching off the nearby high cliffs. Here’s a photo of two of my guests packing their paragliding equipment after a wonderful day’s flying from there.

Occasionally you’ll see a blow cart speeding down the sand. If you’re an early riser you might spot the trainers from Pinebrook Stables exercising their harness racers.

Don’t take your car on the beach unless you’ve got an Auckland Council permit.

Midday: The Kentish Hotel and a Relaxing Lunch
After some fresh air, stop by the Kentish Hotel, New Zealand’s oldest continuously licensed pub, for a hearty meal. Enjoy a relaxed lunch while taking in the historic charm of this iconic establishment, which has been welcoming travellers since 1851.

Afternoon: Awhitu Regional Park, Beaches and Coastal Views
Continue your journey up the Awhitu Peninsula, enjoying rolling hills, farmland, and stunning vistas over the Manukau Harbour. Awhitu Regional Park, about 2 km past Matakawau, is a must-visit, offering short walks with breathtaking coastal views, perfect for a picnic or a refreshing swim in the sheltered waters.

But you’re not done yet! The top of the peninsula is home to several charming coastal settlements tucked away down short roads. Grahams Beach with its long golden sands looks back to the city of Auckland. Big Bay, Orua Bay and Wattle Bay look across the narrow and fast-racing waters of the Manukau Harbour to the bush-clad Waitakere Ranges. They’re favourite holiday spots for those who cherish less crowded beaches and all easily accessible from clarksbeachaccommodation.co.nz/.
